No.

We want high quality content. We want moral honesty and transparency.

We want expertise, and the idea of expertise is not constrained to the academic.

We value the systematic and rigorous nature of academic work, but we also remain highly critical of the exclusive nature of academic circles. Not everyone who is knowledgeable or expert has access to academia and its qualifications of legitimacy.

We still have standards. These standards are determined from within a given area of expertise.

If we receive a submission from an area of expertise that we do not have, then we look for a guest editor to evaluate that submission for us.

For example, Harper is not Muslim. Therefore, if Harper receives a submission from a Muslim perspective, then Harper will look for a guest editor who is qualified to evaluate that submission.

The conversations around “expertise,” “qualification,” and “evaluation” are ongoing and dynamic. These are not ideas that can be sufficiently summarized in a few lines.

We take submissions in context on what the submission is, who the submitter is, and what we are looking for in the theme.

This is why it can take a long time to assemble an issue of SCENE-zine.
